Spiritual Meaning: There must always be death of the old before the new can take its place.

I know that movie producers love to make the appearance of this card seem like the ending of everything, and I hate to tell them this, and ruin their sense of the dramatic, but this card does not mean "death" as most people think of it.

When this card appears in a reading, it does mean an ending to something, but always with a new beginning. The Astrological Ruler of this card is Scorpio, and just as Scorpio means "regeneration", so does this card. "Death" and "regeneration" always go hand-in-hand, for there can not be one without the other.

If you look closely at the card you will see the Sun, rising behind two pillars, in the background. This also symbolizes new beginnings, for day always follows night. Also, the predominant colors appearing on the card, black and white, symbolize death and rebirth.

Thirteen, the number of this card, is a "sacred number". Remember, Jesus was the thirteenth disciple, and the number thirteen appears, time and time again, in almost all sacred disciplines. Thirteen not being a Master Number, it is converted into its total, which is Four. Four means hard work, and, therefore, what is involved with this card is not always easy. However, whenever you are reading this card, remember that whatever it is that will be coming to an end will always be replaced by something to take its place.

If you were reading for someone in regard to their job situation and this card appeared in the spread it would mean that they will be ending their present job in order to take their place in a new one.
