TEMPERANCE--RULED BY SAGITTARIUS
KEYWORDS: Patience, what you have imagined will come to pass.
Spiritual Meaning: The conscious and the subconscious must be in balance before what you desire will be achieved.
The angel is seen standing on the edge of a lake or stream and pouring water back and forth between two cups. The cups represent "containers" and the water symbolizes emotions. The meaning here is the need to contain our emotions.
The angel has one foot in the water and one foot on the earth. The water represents our subconcious (emotional) mind and the earth our conscious (rational) mind. Again we see the interaction ("pouring back and forth") which goes on between the conscious and subconscious minds on a constant basis.
If you look at the left side of the card you will see a path, leading from the edge of the water towards the top of the mountain and the rising Sun. Again we have the symbology of enlightenment, exemplified by the Sun. It also means that with patience and hard work (making your way up the path) what you have imagined will come to pass.
As The Hanged Man, The Temperance card denotes "time". It shows a need for patience, for waiting, of a period of time passing before what is looked for is achieved. The Astrological Ruler of this card is Sagittarius, and in astrology, the lesson to be learned by those born under the sign of Sagittarius is patience.
The number of this card is Fourteen, and the combination number is Five, which means changes. Therefore, this card shows that changes will come, but not until you have carefully poured everything about the situation back and forth between the conscious and subconscious minds many times.
The liquids can also indicate a drug or drinking problem and the need for restraint in this area.
